A few days ago I called Sierra Cares Pet Advocates in California. (Local for me) They rescue animals and find them homes. I requested a dog, and was asked to give the following information: Three personal references to verify that I’m a good pet owner. My current dog’s vet. My dog’s vet history. My dog’s shot records.
They didn’t do a credit check, but every day she asks me for something new. I’ve never BOUGHT a dog, just donated money and adopted one. I’m so sick of this interrogation, I think I will just go buy one. WHAT IS UP? HAS ANYONE EVER GONE THROUGH ANYTHING LIKE THIS????? P.S. I’ve adopted from them before!
I really just don’t understand it at all. I have already adopted from this agency! I’m a return parent. I work part time, spend a lot of time with my animals, take them with me on trips, etc.

I volunteer for an organization which rescues dog. The main person that runs it asks for references and performs a home check. The reason she started doing all this is a few years ago she adopted a beautiful shepard out to what seemed like a loving family. Six months later, she happened to drive by the house and the dog was chained outside and in really poor condition. No doubt these new requirements stem from a similar issue.
Don’t take these processes personally it’s just to make sure the rescued dog has a forever home as well as alleviate worries of previously heartbroken rescue workers.
However… if the interrogation gets unfriendly, the best thing to do is to politely end contact and adopt a dog elsewhere.
